No. II-10-004 February 10, 2010 CONTACT: Roger Hannah (404) 562-4417 E-mail: OPA2@nrc.gov Joey Ledford (404) 562-4416 NRC SCHEDULED TO DISCUSS SAFETY OVERSIGHT OF LES ENRICHMENT FACILITY CONSTRUCTION The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a meeting with officials of Louisiana Energy Services in Eunice, N.M., to discuss the companys performance during the construction of the National Enrichment Facility near Eunice.
The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Feb. 23 at the Eunice Community Center at 906 12th Street in Eunice. Its purpose is to discuss the results of the NRCs Assessment of Licensee Performance, which covers the period from July 1, 2008 through Nov. 30, 2009.
The meeting is open to the public, and NRC officials will be available to answer questions from interested observers.
The discussion will include management measures, facility construction and facility support. In its report, the staff concluded that LES conducted its activities safely and in accordance with the license requirements. The staffs review did not identify a need for any improvement in the areas evaluated, though it did identify some inspection findings in quality assurance oversight and design controls that require the continued focus of LES management.
When completed, the gas centrifuge plant will enrich uranium for use in nuclear power plant fuel. The NRC will schedule another public meeting in the area to discuss the results of the agency's operational readiness reviews.
