WILLIAM DEAN ASSUMES DUTIES AS NRC REGION I OFFICE ADMINISTRATOR William M. Dean, a 25-year veteran of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, has begun serving as the new Regional Administrator for the agencys Region I Office in King of Prussia, Pa., which oversees NRC regulatory activities in the Northeastern United States. He succeeds Samuel J. Collins, who retired in early July.

Over the course of his career, Bill Dean has repeatedly demonstrated his commitment to technical and managerial excellence, said Bill Borchardt, the NRCs Executive Director for Operations. The experience he has gained in a variety of NRC roles will serve him well as he transitions to the top management position in our Region I Office.

Dean joined the NRC in 1985 as an Operator Licensing Examiner in the agencys Region II Office in Atlanta. He held progressively more responsible positions in the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR) and the Office of the Executive Director for Operations (OEDO) from 1989 to 1998. In 1998, he joined the Senior Executive Service, the corps of senior managers for federal agencies.

He subsequently held a number of senior management positions, including Chief of the NRR Inspection Program Branch; Deputy Director of the NRR Division of Inspection Program Management; Deputy Director of the NRR Division of Engineering; and Assistant for Operations in the OEDO. In 2006, he was appointed to his most recent position of Deputy Director of the Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response (NSIR).

Dean received a bachelors degree in applied physics and information sciences from the University of California, San Diego, and a masters degree in business administration from National University. Prior to joining the NRC, he served as a nuclear-qualified surface warfare officer in the Navy.
