CARLTON STOIBER TO SUCCEED HAROLD DENTON IN NRC POST Carlton Stoiber, currently with the U.S. Department of State, will succeed Harold Denton as Director of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Office of International Programs when Mr.

Denton retires in April.

In announcing the appointment, NRC Chairman Ivan Selin praised Mr. Denton for "a long and distinguished career" with the NRC and its predecessor, the regulatory program of the Atomic Energy Commission.

Mr. Stoiber is a former NRC Assistant General Counsel for International and Legislative Affairs.

He will be returning to the NRC from the Department of State, where he has served since August 1981 as Director of Nuclear Export Control (1981-85);

Director of Nuclear and Non-Proliferation Policy (1988-91); and Director of Nuclear Technology and Safeguards (1990-to date).

He also spent three years in Vienna, Austria, as Counselor at the U.S. Mission to U.N. Agencies, with special responsibility for the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Mr. Stoiber will be joining the NRC in mid-April.

Since 1963, Mr. Denton has served as a reactor physicist, reactor inspector, Director of the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, Director of the Office of Governmental and Public Affairs, and most recently, Director of International Programs.

In 1980 Mr. Denton was the first NRC Senior Executive to be awarded the prestigious Presidential Rank Award for Distinguished Executive Service in recognition of his leadership during the Three Mile Island Accident.

In 1986, his outstanding performance as an NRC executive was again recognized when he was awarded the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Service, becoming the first NRC executive to receive both Presidential Rank Awards.
