STEPHEN G. BURNS NAMED NRC GENERAL COUNSEL Stephen G. Burns has been named the new General Counsel of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission by Chairman Dale E. Klein in consultation with the Commission. Burns will succeed Karen D. Cyr, who is retiring May 1, after serving in that position for nearly 15 years.
Burns has been the NRCs Deputy General Counsel since 1998. He began his employment as an NRC attorney in 1978. Since joining the NRC, he has served in various positions, including Executive Assistant to Chairman Kenneth M. Carr, Director of the Office of Commission Appellate Adjudication, and Associate General Counsel. Burns received his J.D. degree with honors in 1978 from the George Washington University, where he was an editor on the George Washington Law Review. He received his B.A. degree, magna cum laude, from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, in 1975.
Burns received the NRC Distinguished Service Award in 2001 and the Presidential Meritorious Executive Rank Award in 1998 and 2008. His appointment becomes effective May 2.
The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is under the supervision of the General Counsel who reports to the Commission. It provides legal advice to the Commission and other agency officials on all aspects of the NRCs regulatory and administrative functions and programs.
