The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by Region II staff (Atlanta, Georgia) on this date.

REGION II RESPONSE TO HURRICANE CHARLEY The Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region II office staffed its Incident Response Center at 5:00 a.m.(EDT) on August 14, 2004, in response to Hurricane Charley. Region II entered the Monitoring Mode at 1:30 p.m. in response to the storm as it traveled through North Carolina and in response to the Brunswick Notice of Unusual Event.
The Brunswick site declared a Notice of Unusual Event on August 14 at 1:08 p.m. (EDT) when it experienced a loss of power that resulted in a unit trip. NRC Resident Inspectors are currently at the nuclear plant site and are reviewing plant conditions. The site is currently not experiencing any high winds or rain. The emergency diesel generators are operating to provide essential power.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency, Region IV, has also activated their Regional Operations Center to monitor the hurricane.
The State of North Carolina has been notified.
