The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by Region II staff (Atlanta, Georgia) on this date.

SUBJECT:
REGION II RESPONSE TO HURRICANE CHARLEY The Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region II office activated its Incident Response Center at 8:00 a.m.
(EDT) on August 13, 2004. Region II is in the Monitoring Mode in response to Hurricane Charley as it nears the west coast of Florida. NRC resident inspectors are currently at the nuclear plant site, and are reviewing preparations for the impending severe weather.
The Crystal River site declared a Notice of Unusual Event on August 12 at 11:00 p.m. (EDT) due to a hurricane Warning being issued for the west coast of Florida. The site is currently not experiencing any high winds or rain. Unit 3 is operating at 100 percent power.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency Region IV has also activated their Regional Operations Center to monitor the hurricane.
The state of Florida has been notified.
