' UPDATE.OF PNO-I-97-051 RADIOLOGICALLY CONTAMINATED MUNICIPAL WASTE 4
This updates PNO-I-97-051. As stated in the original Preliminary Notification from August 8, 1997, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection,-Bureau of. Radiation Proteccion (PA DEP)
, notified-Region I on August 8, 1997, that a City of Jeanette municipal l_-vehicle,_ transporting waste, was prohibited from entering-a landfill- ;
after it triggered entry alarms. After reevaluating the original; survey data, PA DEP determined the radiological' contaminant to be iodine-131.
.Bacause.the waste _ appeared to be household waste,-the radioactive
-contaminant is likely to be the result of contamination from a patient who had-been released form medical care:in accordance with the regulations-in 10-CFR-35.75.
The_ contaminated material'was-sealed _in double plastic. bags and is being held at the Jeanette MunicipalLGarage.
-Region I staff-are' coordinating event responss with che Environmental' Protection. Agency (EPA) . The' EPA is the -lead agency for radioactive -
smaterial discovered-in the public domain of unknown origin.
