By letter dated September 12, 2003, Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) submitted an application for the renewal of the operating licenses of Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, Units I and 2 (FNP).
In a telephone conference on February 24, 2005, the NRC Staff requested clarification of SNC's commitment to the FNP Buried Piping and Tanks Inspection Program for the period of extended operation.
As a result, SNC will perform an inspection of buried piping and tanks within ten years after entering the period of extended operation, unless an opportunistic inspection has occurred within this ten-year period. Before the tenth year, SNC will perform an engineering evaluation to determine if sufficient inspections have been conducted to draw a conclusion regarding the ability of the underground coatings to protect the underground piping and tanks from degradation. If not, SNC will conduct a focused inspection to allow that conclusion to be reached.
