Dear Senator Capito :
On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am responding to your November 1, 2023, letter requesting information about the NRC ' s subsequent license renewal application review process.
The subsequent license renewal application review process continues to be a priority for the NRC. As described in the enclosure to this letter, the NRC staff is implementing several improvements to increase efficiencies in the review process while focusing on reasonable assurance of safety and the Principles of Good Regulation. In addition, the Commission has recently directed the NRG staff to provide a roadmap to restore the license renewal program to a path of timely and predictable reviews and achieve the goal of 18-month reviews. The staff continues to engage stakeholders to identify additional efficiencies and plans to continue to prioritize enhanc ing this review process.
I appreciate your letter and continued interest in the subsequent license renewal application review process. If you have any questions on the enclosed response, or need additional information, please contact me, or have your staff contact Eugene Dacus, Director of the Office of Congressional Affairs, at (301) 415-1776.
