No: 22-009 February 25, 2022 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRCs Antonios Zoulis Honored as a 2022 Federal Engineer of the Year Antonios Zoulis, a probabilistic risk assessment branch chief at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, has been chosen by the National Society of Professional Engineers as one of the top 32 professional engineers in the federal government. Zoulis received the honor Feb. 24 during the NSPEs 43rd virtual annual ceremony.
Zoulis is chief of the PRA Oversight Branch in the NRCs Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation. He was recognized for significant advances in risk-informed decision-making by developing the Risk-Informed Process for Evaluations, an important initiative at the NRC that allows the staff to focus on the most safety-significant issues.
Antonios has led many efforts to improve the NRCs oversight of nuclear power plants, said NRR Director Andrea Veil. Hes contributed to several inspection procedure updates that focus attention on safety-significant issues, as well as developing a resource for inspectors to use in the field. The NSPE, which serves more than 26,000 licensed professional engineers of all disciplines, promotes the ethical and competent practice of engineering. Federal agencies employing at least 50 engineers may nominate candidates for the Federal Engineer of the Year award. Top candidates are honored each year and the society names a single winner at the ceremony. Recent NRC honorees include Gabriel Taylor (2015) and David Stroup (2014), both with the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research.
Zoulis has a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Manhattan College, a masters degree in mechanical engineering from Columbia University, and an MBA from Pace University. He holds a Professional Engineer license with the state of Maryland.
