RE: FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT REQUEST

Dear Mr. Grimsley:

This request is made pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 522, as amended. UNION ASSOCIATES submits this request to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to obtain documents regarding the following:

t ALL DOCUMENTS PERTAINING TO SUPPLEMENTAL SAFETY EVALUATION REPORTS (SSER) FILED WITH THE NRC BY THE LONG ISLAND LIGHTING COMPANY (LILCO) BETWEEN FEBRUARY 3, 1983 AND JUNE 30, 1983.

PLEASE INCLUDE ALL EXHIBITS AND BACKUP MATERIALS FILED WITH THIS SSER INFORMATION.

In your response, the NRC should consider " documents" to mean any and all forms of written consnunication, including internal NRC staff memoranda. Your response should also include, but not be limited to, the following:

reports, studies, plans, graphs, charts, diagrams, memoranda, correspondence, test results, working papers, meeting notes and minutes, computer records and print-outs, notes and summaries of conversations and interviews.

These documents are specifically requested from, but not liinited to, the following offices of the NRC:

Office of Investigations Office of Inspection and Audit Office of Nucleqr Reactor Research Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research Office of Analysis and Evaluation of Operational Data Operating Reactors Branch of the Division of Licensing NRC files at King of Prussia NRC files at the Shoreham Nuclear Plant site.

UNION ASSOCIATES requests the NRC to provide all documents prepared or utilized by, in the possession of, or routed through the 8708270090 870805 PDR FOIA PALAST87-509 PDR e s.

30, 1983.

1983 and June 30, 1983. s

3. Any correspondence between LILCO and the NRC regarding SORT SSER*s between February 3, 1983 and June 30, 1983.

4. All documents, including formal and informal notes and minutes, pertaining to meetings or telephone conversations between NRC representatives and LILCO and/or Stone & Webster Engineering Personnel regarding SORT SSER*s between February 3, 1983 and June 30, 1983.

In your response, please identify which documents correspond to each request itemized above. If any of the material covered by this request has been destroyed and/or removed, please provide all surrounding documentation, including but not limited to a description of the action (s) taken, relevant date(s) and justification (s) for the action (s).

For any documents or portions of documents you deny due to a specific FOIA exemption, please provide an index itemizing and describing the documents withheld. Pursuant to Vaugh v. Rosen (I),

484 F.2d 280 (D.C. Cir. 1973), cert. denied, 415 U.S. 977 (1974),

the index is required to provide a detailed justification of your grounds for claiming each exemption and an explanation of why each exemption is relevant to the document or portion of the document withheld.
