NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION g

E WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 August 21, 1987 Docket No. 99901070/86-01 Ladish Company Industrial Products Division ATTN: Mr. W. A. M: Roberts Manager, Quality Assurance

(

Route 6, Box 175 J

Russellville, Arkansas 72801 Gentlemen:

Thank you for your letters of March 27 and June 1, 987, in response to our letters dated February 2 and May 6, 1987. We have reviewed your replies and find that additional information is needed with respect to the concerns raised in our Notice of Violation dated February 2, 1987.

Section 21.3(a)(3) of 10 CFR Part 21 doesn't specifically mention "calibra-tion services." However, coverage of services associated with a basic component are within the intent of the regulation. The NRC specifically addressed the issue of 10 CFR Part 21 applicability to calibration services as it relates to basic components in NuReg 0302, Rev. 1, dated October 1977. Because calibration services could have an effect upon a basic component, 10 CFR Part 21 is applicable.

Therefore, it is requested that you describe the actions taken by Ladish Company to address the concerns documented in the Notice of Violation.

Please provide this additional information within 30 days from the date of this letter in order that we may complete our review in a timely manner.

If you have any questions on the NRC's position on this subject, you may contact Ellis Herschoff (301/492-9644) of the Vendor Inspection Branch or Chip Cameron (301/492-8689) of the Office of the General Counel of the NRC.

Sincerely, O
