Subject:

LOSS OF MAIN COOLANT PUMP SEAL The Region II office (Atlanta) was notified on May 2, 1975, that the shaft seals on Main Coolant Pump C,had failed and resulted in discharge, directly or indirectly, of approximately 100,000 gallons of primary coolant into the containment.

This is an unisolatable leak. Pressurizer level was maintained by use of the three charging pumps w)hich indicates that leakage through the seal may have reached approximately 250 gpm.

s.. _.s The reactor was at 100% power when.the seal failed. Power reduction was initiated immediately and at 36% a reactor trip occurred. The Safety

(

Injection Sys' tem was operated intermittently to assure adequate water

~

level in the pressurizer vessel.

The plant was brought to cold shutdown condition in the natural circulation and RHR cooling modes. All systems functioned normally throughout the event and at no time was there inadequate cooling of the reactor fuel.

There were not significant releases of radioactivity to uncontrolled areas.

A Region II inspector is being sent to the facility on 5/2/75 to t

further evaluate the occurrence.
