ABSTRACT 1
Connecticut Yankee Technical Specification, Section 3.6, " Core Cooling Systems" requires that the four Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) pumps meet specific head and flow criteria.
The first test of these pumps under full flow conditions was performed on January 11, 1986.
Full flow tests were conducted on each of the pumps to determine head versus flow characteristics and to generate pump curves to confirm the Technical Specification requirements.
Pump performance data was then compared using the manufacturer's data as a reference for future testing.
A retest was performed under full flow conditions on the "A" HPSI pump on April 10, 1986.
This test was requested because modifications were made on the pump.
Appendix I shows the total dynamic head calculation for the data accumulated with a head versus flow curve, indicating an improvement 4
in pump performance.
Since the periodic testing of the ECCS pumps will be required, this test report will serve as a basis for subsequent testing.

4 CONCLUSIONS The performance of the four ECCS pumps verified that each pump operated above its requirements stated in Section 3.6 of the CY Technical Specifica-tions.
The test also demonstrated check valve operability per Section 4.10 of the Technical Specifications.
Flow tests were individually conducted on each pump.
Two separate tests were performed on the "A" High Pressure Safety Injection (HPSI) pump because of unsteady flow readings during the initial run.
Results obtained from the second test sequence demonstrated more consistent data, as a result of more steady flow conditions between flow points.
The data recorded on the "B" Low Pressure Safety Injection (LPSI) pump showed rather wide data scatter at one flow point'.
This resulted from an unsteady flow profile because of a misadjustment of the discharge valve.
Results still exceeded the requirements even with the occurrence of these erratic data points.

RECOMMENDATIONS Prior to performing a full flow test, the calibration and installation of pressure and flow instruments should be completed at least one month before the test date.
This would allow a simulated flow test, preferably on recirculation flow, to be conducted to check system instrumentation and computer software for integrity.
Continued performance testing of the ECCS pumps with the plant in Mode 5 would provide a consistent means of testing.

l DESCRIPTION OF FULL FLOW TEST A full flow test was conducted on each of the four ECCS pumps on January 11, 1986 to determine pump performance characteristics.
The two HPSI and two LPSI pumps were tested per plant surveillance procedure SUR 5.7-106, Revision 1.
Each pump was individually tested by pumping water from the Refueling Water Storage Tank (RWST) into the Reactor Coolant System and filling the Pressurizer.
Precautions were taken to prevent from overfilling the Pressurizer by limiting the fill volume to 90 percent with provisions for possible overfill into the P'ressurizer Relief Tank.
Safety concerns for this test were addresssed in References 1 and 2.
To document pump performance, specific pressure and flow parameters were monitored using a computer data acquisition system.
Data was compiled to f
calculate Total Dynamic Head (TDH) in feet and to generate graphical k-results of Total Dynamic Head with respect to Discharge Flow rate (Q) in gallons per minute.
Test results were compared to the Technical Specifica-tion, requirements (Reference 3) fo.r each pump as listed in Table 1.
This table lists tne Technical Specification requirements and the results from the January 11 test and April 10 "A" HPSI retest.
Test results were listed based upon the required flow rate for each pump.

TEST PARAMETERS:
During the testing of the ECCS pumps, four (4) pipe flow rates, eight (8) pressures, one RWST water level, and one differential pressure were monitored.
For the HPSI system, flow readings were measured on the HPSI 12-inch common suction line from the RWST and HPSI 1-inch common recirculation line.
For clarity, the word " common" means that each pump utilizes the s l'
1 same pipe.
The discharge flow was derived by taking the difference between the suction and recirculation flow measurements.
One inlet and outlet pressure was also measured on each HPSI pump.
The LPSI system parameters were monitored by obtaining flow readings on the LPSI 18-inch common suction line from the RWST and LPSI 2-inch common recirculation line.
One pressure reading was taken on the LPSI 18-inch common suction line, since no provision exists on either individual pump suction inlet.
Because of the elevation of this common suction pressure, the reading had to be corrected for actual pump inlet pressure.
Pressure readings were taken on each pump discharge outlet with one differential pressure reading on the LPSI common discharge line.
Data from the differential pressure transmitter was recorded but not used for the total dynamic head analysis.
The RWST water level was also monitored throughout the flow test.
This provision was an alternate means of obtaining pump discharge flow rate if a flow instrument had malfunctioned.

DATA FLOW POINTS:
Several pump discharge flow points were used as a means of obtaining head versus flow results.
The test sequence was initiated by first, operating each pump on recirculation flow with the discharge valve closed and reading all pressure and flow parameters.
To accumulate all test parameters, several scans were made using a computer function key.
This scanning function, which was initiated manually, allowed the computer data acquisition system to monitor all parameter channel inputs and store the information on disk.
These scan points are represented in small groups as shown on each pump curve.
After obtaining recirculation flow data, the pump discharge valve was positioned to produce a predetermined discharge pressure.
Several data scans were taken using the computer function key.
The discharge valve was then opened to a second pressure setting and data was again scanned..-

The computer accumulated the data and calculated the instantaneous Total Dynamic Head upon command.
For a given discharge flow there was a respective total dynamic head.
These points were plotted using a computer graphics program in the Statistical Analysis System (SAS). A regression polynominal was chosen to best fit the measured head versus flow points and generate a curve for each pump.
All data, even that which may not be at steady state conditions, is plotted and used for the development of the head vs. flow curve.
The use of all data points is considered to be conservative.
The polynominal curve fit represents the best fit of the data ac' quired, but does not imply continuous head / flow data for use in redesign or future Design Basis Accident LOCA Analyses.
Each graph shows the test results with' the manufacturer's data overlayed for reference purposes.
Vertical and horizontal dashed reference lines on each graph represent Technical Specification requirements, with the point of inter-section being the acceptance criteria for the pump's output, k.
The data recorded on the "B" LPSI pump showed wide data scatter at one flow point.
This resulted from an unsteady flow profile because of a misadjustment of the discharge gate valve.
During the test, test engineers had observed this flow instability due to the operation of the valve.
Because the computer system scans all channel inputs and cannot isolate nonessential data, the information from nonrunning pumps was also recorded.
Only pertinent data for each pump being tested is listed in Tables 2 through 5.
The computer printout of test data is listed in Table 6.
TEST INSTRUMENTATION ULTRASONIC FLOW SYSTEM:
The following flow instruments were used to monitor suction and recircu-lation flow on each of the ECCS pumps during testing (see Figure 1 for locations):

2 RW5T WATER LEVEL INSTRUMENTATION:
To monitor RWST water level during pump testing, the level transmitter in the tank was used.
This level was recorded for information purposes and also as a back-up parameter to determine discharge flow.

2 COMPUTER DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEM:
The essential parameters for determining head versus flow characteristics f'or each pump were channeled into a data acquisition system and analyzed.
The test results for each pump were tabulated and then reduced to generate head versus flow curves.

The data acquisition system consisted of the following:
1.
Hewlett Packard 9836CS Keyboard and Monitor (S/N:
2250A02279).
2.
Hewlett Packard 3497A Data Acquisition Unit (S/N:
2340A12868).
3.
Hewlett Packard 2671G Printer (S/N:
2301A09721).
A block diagram showing the computer data acquisition system is shown on Figure 4.
AC POWER SUPPLY UNITS:
Two AC power supply units were used to supply 24 volts to each of the Bristol-Babcock pressure transmitters.
These voltage supplies were installed by the Instrumentation & Control Department.

DATA COMPUTATION The computer data system used for the ECCS Flow Test included a program to calculate pump head.
For the pressure transmitters, calibration data consisting of millivolts versus pressure in psig was modeled in a Statistical Analysis System (SAS) program on the mainframe computer in Berlin.
This established a linear curve representation for pressure readings which the computer code utilized for converting a transmitter voltage to a pressure in psig.
For the flow readings, analog voltage output connections were wired from the Controlotron flow computer to the Hewlett Packard Data Acquisition unit.
A flow range in feet per second was first determined for each pipe, then the analog indicator on the Controlotron* flow computer was set for each range.
A conversion from voltage to gallons per minute was made in the computer code for the total dynamic head analysis.
Once the total dynamic head was calculated for each data point, the
't._2 result was graphed versus the flow rate recorded at that instant of time.
Graphical results for each pump are shown in Figures 5 through 8.
A root-mean-square (rms) error analysis was performed for the test data to observe the variations of the data points.
This analysis is shown in Appendix II.

ERROR ANALYSIS Root Mean Square (RMS) Method The RMS method was performed for the test data to measure the deviation between data points.
This deviation was referenced to the head versus flow curve for each pump.
Error analyses are listed in Tables II-1 through II-4.
The following equation (Reference 10) was used to calculate the plus/minus error for each data point:
RMS = + J12 + 22% = + /Ik RMS = + 2.236%
