Dear Mr. Berkow:
As you know, your office has recently released a Draft Environmental Statement for the Decommissioning of the Humboldt Bay Nuclear Power Plant, Unit #3. This docu-ment recommends the nuclear facility be put in a safe stor-age mode for thirty years prior to decommissioning and dismantlement. The public comment period for this public-ation is currently. scheduled to end on June 16, 1986.
At this time,'we are requesting a sixty day ex-tension on the comment period due to the importance of allowing the public to thoroughly review.this document.
A large portio'n of the local community 'is still unaware that they can take part in this process. The Redwood Alliance is actively trying to educate people in this matter. We have a variety of experts reviewing the En-
~vironmental Statement.and will submit written comments as soon as possible.
There does not appear to be an extreme urgency in completing the Final Environmental. statement given the long time frame of the proposed action. It is hoped that you will see fit to' grant the extension requested to allow the public the fullest opportunity to render their opinion.
