The seal was recovered from Seabrook Station's Sen* ice Water System Pumphouse forebay on November 18,1997. North Atlantic notified the Natio d Marine /isheries Senice of this entrapment incident by telephone'. The New England Aquarium has been notified to pick up the seal in order to perform a necropsy in the near future.

'lhis teport is made in response to the National Marine Fisheries Senice letter dated January 5, 1995', recommending that North Atlantic report seal entrapment incidents. The attached seal entrapment incident report is enclosed as requested.

Nonh Atlantic submitted an application for a Small Take Exemption Permit on June 13,1997' for the incidental taking of seals pursuant to Section 101(a)(5)(A) of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and in accordance with 50 CFR 216.104.

Date of Recovery: Seal recovered en November 18,1997.

SpeciesIdentification: Indeterminate due to decay.

Description, Condition of Scal: lleavily decayed. Weight about 40 pounds.

Reporter: Ronald A. Sher, Senior Scientist Recent Seal Observations: Two seals were discovered on October 18 and 20,1997. An incident repor' was submitted to the NMFS'. Necropsy

' results are expected from the New England Aquarium in the near future. ,

Recent Fish Impingement: An estimated 2,100 fish were impinged during the week previous to the sea; entrapment, including about 840 windowpane flounder,70 winter flounder,130 red hake, 220 silver hake and 140 herring species. Due to the advancea decay of the seal it is likely that entrapment occurred several

- weeks prior to the date of identification (11/18/97) and was not coincident with the fish impingement described here.
