Thank you for your letter of December 29,1997. The Commission concurs in your view that the NRC-NNSA Protocol on Cooperation on Nuclear Safety Matters has been a successful safety information collaboration. The Protocol does expire this month and the Commission accepts your suggestion to continue our cooperation under the terms of the Protocol until your visit to Washington this summer. At that time, i look forward to meeting with you, continuing our discussions on nuclear safety licensing issues, and signing the renewal of our Protocol. I will be communicating separately about scheduling arrangements and proposed discussion topics for your visit.
