NRC NAMES WILLIAM MATHIS TO ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON REACTOR SAFEGUARDS The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has appointed William M. Mathis, recently retired Director of Planning for United Nuclear Industries, Richland, Washington, to its Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS).

The ACRS is an independent group of experts established by law to advise the Commission on the safety aspects of proposed and existing power reactors and other nuclear facilities and the adequacy of proposed reactor safety standards.

Mr. Mathis has 33 years experience in nuclear power projects and in the management of nuclear fuel production.

He has held responsible positions for quality assurance in nuclear power activities and was responsible for corporate planning for United Nuclear Industries before his retirement.

He earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Colorado in 1937 and completed the General Electric Company's advanced management course in 1956.

Mr. Mathis began his career in the nuclear field with the TNX Division of the DuPont Company where he was responsi-ble for instrumentation for measurement and control of nuclear reactors at the Clinton Laboratories at Oak Ridge, Tennessee and the "D" production reactor at the Hanford Works at Richland. After World War II, Mr. Mathis joined General Electric at Richland where he served in positions of increasing responsibility in the instrument department and in metals preparation. In 1956, he was appointed Manager.

In 1965, Mr. Mathis j oined Douglas United Nuclear as
