Dear West Valley Citizen Task Force Msmbers:

a/

Thank you for inviting the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to provide technical support to the West Valley Citizen Task Force.

I enjoyed meeting j

you and partic'.; ting in the initial Task Force meeting on Wednesday, January i

29th at the Ashford Office Complex. NRC looks forward to a productive working i

relationship with the Task Force and continued cooperation with the U.S.

Department of Energy and New York State Energy Research and Development l

Authority on planning the completion of the West Valley Demonstration Project.

j To help facilitate this process and our support to the Task Force, I am l

enclosing a brief description of the organizations within the NRC that are t

involved in overseeing the West Valley Demonstration Project. The principal j

NRC contacts that we anticipate will be involved with the Task Force are Gary Comfort, NRC's Project-Manager for West Valley; George Pangburn, Gary's l

Section Chief; Boby Eid, the Division of Waste Management's expert working on West Valley; Todd Jackson, Region l's lead inspector on West Valley; and mysel f.

Gary, George, and I will probably be the NRC participants in Task Force meetings..

If there is any assistance that we can provide to the Task Force, please let me know. We will attempt to be at many of the Task Force meetings to provide i

the technical support that you have called on us to provide.

However, we can i

only participate to the extent that our resources and other regulatory l

priorities allow.

If we cannot make a Task Force meeting, we will thoroughly review the meeting notes from that meeting to avoid any gap that might otherwise occur due to our absence.

In addition, if there is a particular meeting that you want to ensure NRC attendance at (e.g.,_one at which the Task Force is evaluating the' viability of alternatives for cleanup or stabilization i

of an area), please communicate your desire to us early so we can make the necessary preparations to attend. Gary, George, Boby, and myself can all be contacted through the NRC operator by dialing 1-800-368-5642.

We look forward to working with the Task Force in planning a safe path for completing the West Valley Demonstration Project.

Sincerely,

/s/

Michael F. Weber, Chief
