McGuire Nuclear Station Response to Violation 50-369/83-05 Violation 50-369/83-05-04, Severity Level V:
10 CFR 20.203e requires that each area or room in which licensed material is used or stored and which contains any radioactive material in an amount exceeding 10 times the quantity of such material specified in Appendix C of this part shall be conspicuously posted with a sign or signs bearing the radiation caution symbol and the words: CAUTION - RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS.
Contrary to the above, a trailer containing greater than 10 times the Appendix C quantity for Co-60 was not posted as required in that the trailer was posted only with a D.O.T. placard " Radioactive" with which it was originally shipped.
Response
1.
Duke Power agrees the violation occurred as stated.
2.
When technicians detected dose rates less than rates which would require radiation area posting, the individuals overlooked checking the quantity of radioactive materiel.
3.
The immediate corrective action was to post the vehicle. Applicable personnel were reminded of the requirements of 10 CFR 20.203(e).
4.
A step will be added to the applicable procedures to verify the quantity of radioactive material against Appendix C and the requirements of 10 CFR 20.203(e).
5.
The station will be in full compliance by April 1, 1983.
