A BALTI M ORE GAS AND ELECTRIC CHARLES CENTER P. O. BOX 1475 BALTIMORE, MARYLAND 21203 ARTHun E. LONDVALL, Jm.
VICE PREssoENT SuppLv Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attention: Mr. R. A. Clark, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #3 Division of Licensing U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
. Washington, D.C. 20355
Subject:
Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Units Nos.1 & 2; Dockets Nos. 50-317 and 50-318 NUREG-0737, Action Item II.D.1 Performance Testing of Safety and Relief Valves Gentlemen:
In our letter of November 16,1982 (same subject) we informed you that we had received the results of the Electric Power Reseach Institute (EPRI) safety and relief valve testing program and were commencing an evaluation of the test data to determine what actions, if any, are appropriate for implementation at Calvert Cliffs Units 1 and 2. We stated in that letter that we expected to submit our plant-specific report per Item II.D.I.2.b no later than March of 1983 for Unit I and no later than November of 1983 for Unit 2.
The evaluation that is now underway is being performed in two major segments in parallel. The first is a reanalysis of safety and relief valve piping and supports under the dynamic conditions that exist during blowdown. The second is a confirmatory analysis of safety and relief valve operability under these same conditions. Each of these analyses is being performed by a contractor.
The purpose of this letter is to inform you that we have reevaluated our schedules for various safety-related engineering work items being performed by our contractors and have determined that due to conflicts with other work items that we consider to have greater safety significance, we will not be able to meet the above l
schedule for submitting plant-specific reports on Item II.D.I. Instead, we propose to submit these reports no later than September,1983 for Unit I and no later than February,1984 for Unit 2.
In our November 16, 1982 letter we also stated that modifications, if required, will be scheduled for the Fall,1983 outage of Unit I and for the Spring,1984 outage of Unit 2. In light of the above-revised schedule for issuing final reports, we are not able to assure completion during these outages of any modifications that might be required. Although we do not expect that any modifications will be required, we will inform you of such requirements and our schedule for implementing them when they are Identified.
