'Ihis letter constitutes an interim report concerning the subject condition initially reported to the Ocmnission as a potentially report-able deficiency under 10TR50.55(e).
This iten was originally identified in CG&E's investigation of find-ings cited in I.E. Inspection Report 81-27. 'Ihis investigation revealed that weld surface irregularities detected in radiographic review of welds in the "as-welded" condition may mask rejectable indications. The initial review of a randan sample totaling 363 radioaraphs noted that approximately two-thirds were shot in the "as-welded" condition. Of that two-thirds, surface irregularities in seventy-three (73) welds were identified that may mask rejectable indications. 'Ihese welds are in the process of being radiographed and re-evaluated. To date, only one weld, which was identi-fied in the referenced NBC inspection report, has shown a rejectable condition, a one and one-half inch slag inclusion, which was masked fran radiographic examination. It appears that inadequate surface preparation of joints welded utilizing a stringer bead technique may be a contributing factor in masking defects.
CG&E has issued a Management Corrective Action Request to addmss this concern. A resolution is expected to be available by July 20, 1982, at which time a follow-up report will be subnitted.
