SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Docket No.

50-247 Date:

4/12/82 Completed by:

J. Curry Telephone:

(914) 526-5235 Indian Point No. 2 began the month of May, 1982 operating at 100% reactor power.

At approximately 2:20 P.M. on Wednesday, May 5, a controlled plant shutdown was initiated due to failure of equipment associated with the control room air conditioning / filtration system.

Concurrent with the load reduction, repairs were successfully completed and the shutdown process was terminated at approximately 25% reactor power.

Unit output was then increased to the 100% reactor power level on May 6.

Unit No. 2 tripped automatically from full load at 5:40 A.M. on Monday, May 17.

The initiating cause of the trip was perturbation in the feedwater system that was induced in the course of investigating a problem with the containment weld channel and piping penetration pressurization system.

Shortly after the unit trip, No. 23 motor driven auxiliary boiler feedwater pump was removed f rom service to investigate and correct the cause of an overheated pump thrust bearing.

I I

Subsequently, No. 22 turbine auxiliary boiler feedwater pump was removed f rom service on Wednesday, May 19, due to governor control oscillations.

Investigation revealed overheating of both the turbine governor and pump end bearings. With two of the three auxiliary feedwater pumps out of service, the reactor coolant temperature was reduced to less than 350 F in accordance with station operating procedure.

Following completion of repairs to Nos. 22 and 23 auxiliary boiler feedwater pumps, Unit No. 2 was returned to service at 5:07 P.M. on Monday, May 24.

Approximately one hour later, the Unit tripped automatically due to high level in No. 22 steam generator.

The Unit was again synchronized to the bus at 10:00 P.M. and output raised to the 100%

reactor power level on May 25.

Unit No. 2 tripped automatically at 7:45 A.M. on Sunday, May 30 as a result of a spurious trip of No. 22 main boiler feedwater pump.

The Unit was returned to service at 11:45 A.M. that same day and the unit output raised to the 100% reactor power level.
