y OESCRIPTION OF EVENT Due to low water pressure to the Alum and Polymer skids, insufficient chemical addition resulted in poor coagulation and settling in the, clarifiers at the WTF.

This condition permitted iron, in the form of finely divided solids, to pass through the Media Filters.

2.6 ppm iron was found.

The limit is 1.0 ppm.

This is in violation of the NPDES Permit 2ep u s s m andAAppendix B of the Technical Specification.

This report is being made in accordance with Section 3.2 of Appendix B.

DVR Number:

1-1-82-27 II.

LaSalle County Station: Unit 1 Ill. Event

Description:

Wastewater Treatment Facili ty (WWTF) effluent total iron of 2.6 mg/l on composite of 20APR82, analyzed on 30APR82.

This was an H.P.D.E.S. violation, exceeding license Ilmits of 1.0 mg/l for total tron.

IV.

Probable Consequences of the Occurrence:

Safe operation of the unit was maintained at all times and the health and safety of the public was not affected by this event.

Compliance wi th NPDES requi rements for total iron has been a continuing problem.

V.

Cause:

Low water pressure to the Alum and Polymer skids prevented the automatic operation of the skids.

This prevented the skids from auto-matically making new alum and polymer solutions. When the alum and polymer solutions were used up, lack of alum and polymer addition resulted in poor coagulation and settling in the WWTF. Clarifiers.

This condition permitted iron, in the form of finely divided solids to pass through the WWTF Media Filters.

This event was identified on 30APR82, following analysis of a 24-hour composite sample from 19APR82 to 20APR82.

VI.

Corrective Action:

Manual control of the polymer and alum additions was taken on 23APR82 as a result of previous sampling.

This manual control will continue until a water head tank and booster pump is installed to "P"

remedy the low water pressure. The installation is in progress under W.R. #L12986 and W.R. #L14001.
