Subject:
Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item on Non-Seismic Equipnent' Over Seismic (#26)
Dear Mr. Keppler:
This additional interim report on the Non-Seismic Equipnent over Seismic problem has been prepared to provide you with the current status of this problem.
The problem was originally reported to Mr. J. Konklin of NRC-Region III by Mr. R.W. Barr, Detroit Edison Project Quality Assurance Director, by telephone on January 18, 1980. It had been noted, at the time, that non-seismic r,.11pnent was erected over and/or in close proximity to safety related
'uiprent.
Edisor rineering had identified the affected equignent as non-seismic pieces of HVAC duct located in the Reactor and Auxiliary Buildings. The problem did not exist in the RHR ccruplex, as all HVAC duct work there has been seismically designed; nor does it exist in other Fermi 2 buildings such as the Turbine or Radwaste Buildings, as no safety related equipnent is located there.
A redesign of supports in the problem areas was necessary. A contract to do this work was awarded to Giffels Associates, Inc. Giffels conducted a study on the ducts, and an actual reanalysis of duct hangers was started in July and has been ccrnpleted. Edison Engineering released drawings for the 4th and 5th floor duct systems. Where electrical cable trays were involved, Sargent and Lundy is performing the work under existing contracts, however, the piping system report has not yet been received. The required construc-tion work will be performed as construction schedules allow.
Another report on this item, either interim or final, is scheduled to be sent to you on or before March 10, 1982. If you have any questions con-cerning this matter, please contact Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor-Construc-tion Quality Assurance.
Verytrulyyours, H
