.T Docket Nos. 50-508 and 50-509 Washington Public Power Supply System Nuclear Projects 3 and 5 (WNP-3/5)
Response to IE Bulletin 81-03: Flow Blockage of Cooling Water to Safety System Components by Cprbicula sp. (Asiatic clam)
Question 1:
Determine whether Corbicula sp. or Mytilus sp. is present in the vicinity of the station.
Response
Mytilus sp., a salt water aussel, has not been found in the fresh water of the Chehalis River, 1977-1979.
Corbicula sp. has been found in natural substrate (i.e. core) and artificial substrate (i.e. multiple plate) samples from the Chehalis River, 1976-1980.
Question 2:
If these organisms are present in the local envircnment and potentially affected systems have been filled from the station source or receiving water body, determine whether infestation has occurred.
Response
Corbicula sp. are present in the Chehalis River; however, it seems highly improbable that these organisms will present a problem based on the following information:
a.
Makeup water for WNP-3/5 will be supplied by a Ranney well intake system (Figure 1). The system consists of three wells located on land south of the Chehali; River (Figure 2).
Each well consists of a concrete caisson sunk to a depth of about 100 feet.
Slotted horizontal pipes (each 200-300 feetlong) project from the bottom of the caisson into the surrounding gravels where they collect water.
The water is delivered to the caisson which serves as a wet well.
o.
In-plant water will be withdrawn from the aquifer 100 feet below the Chehalis River bed.
It is extremely unlikely that any Cprbicula larvae could pass, unfiltered by the soil, into the WnP-3/5 plant circulating water system.
Question 3:
Describe the acticns taken in Items 1 and 2 above for construction permit holders and include the following information:
a.
Applicable ' portions of the environmental monitoring program, including last sample date and results.
~
b.
Components and systems affected, c.
Extent of fouling if any existed.
d.
How and when foulirig was discovered.
e.
Corrective and preventive actions.
Response
a.
The most recent samples from the Chehalis River were collected in the September-October 1980 time period and no Corbicula were found.
b.-
At the current stage of construction, no permanent plant e.
systems are complete to the point of utilization, thus the potential for fouling does not yet exist.
Question 4:
Describe methods planned (including iniplementation date) for pre-venting and detecting future flow blockage or degradation due to clam or shell debris.
Response
Based upon the response to Question 2, it is our feeling that Corbicula fouling will not be a problem at WNP-3/5, and no further monitoring is proposed.
