INTERIM REPORT POTENTIAL REPORTABLE DEFICIENCY ARIZONA PUBLIC SERVICE COMPANY (APS)

PVNGS UNITS NO. 1, 2 AND 3 I.

Potential Problem Bechtel Construction initiated this deficiency report because of apparent discrepancies between Pullman Power Products fur-nished pipe supports and the welding requirements specified on Bechtel's pipe support drawings.

The concerns are as follows:

Pullman failed to provide the required joint preparation a.

based on visual examinations (borescope) of the ID of

welds, b.

Prior Trend Analysis of Bechtel NCR's PA-2180, PA-2196, PA-2917 and PA-2358 resulted in Corrective Action Requests S-81-53 and S-81-54 being issued to Pullman Power Products and Bechtel Engineering for resolution.

Pullman has re-spended by stating that their supports are in compliance with their interpretation of Bechtel's design drawing requirementa.

II.

Approach To and Status Of Proposed Resolution A destructive examination was made on seven (7) pipe support assemblies to determine and verify the actual weld penetration.

The examination showed lack of full penetration welds on all samples. The amount of weld penetration varied over a large t

range, All affected pipe support shop drawings assembled by Pullman have been sent to Bechtel for Units 1, 2 and 3 (450 total).

Bechtel is reviewing the shop drawings to evaluate the extent of the concerns.

The Resolution Plan is as follows:

The requirement for additional testing, examination is a.

being eval tated, b.

Analyses will be made to determine the load carrying capacit y and the design adequacy of each affected pipe support.

The design load and the application point will be used c.

in the evaluation of each support.

d.

After the completion of t.. s additional evaluation, a recommendation and final disposition can be made.

III.

Projected. Completion of. Corrective Action and' Submittal Date of the Final Report The Bechtel analysis, review, disposition and final report is forecast to be completed by October 25, 1981.
