. AECM-83/0498 Page 2 of 2 SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION TO LER 82-050/99 X-1 Mississippi Power & Light Company Grand Gulf Nuclear Station - Unit 1 Docket No. 50-416 Technical Specification Involved: 3.3.7.9 Reported Under Technical Specification: 6.9.2 Event Narrative:

This is an update to a previous report submitted on September 13, 1982. The event for which the report was submitted is described in the following paragraph.

On August 6, 1982, fire detection zone 2-10 went into an alarm condition and would not clear. A fire watch was established by operations. This condition has been encountered several times since the system was placed into service. Zone 2-10 includes the flame detectors in the HPCS D/G room and the ionization smoke detectors in the corridor between the D/G building and the Auxiliary Building. Each time this zone has gone into an alarm condition and would not clear it was, found that the ionization detector needed to be cleaned. Investigation revealed that diesel exhaust fumes are drifting into the corridor and contaminating the ionization detectors. For this reason a design change (DCP 82/572) has been submitted to change the ionization detectors to flame detectors which are not sensitive to dust or fumes.

The change is expected to be implemented by the first refueling outage following commercial operation. This is submitted as a final report.

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit 1 Docket No. 50-416 License No. NPF-13 File 0260/L-835.0 Update Report - Smoke Detector Inoperability LER 82-050/99 X-1 AECM-83/0498 This letter submits an update to a previous report submitted on September 13, 1982. The event for which the report was submitted occurred on August 6, 1982, when the early fire detection system in the diesel generator room and fresh air corridor progressed into the alarm state and would not clear. No smoke or fire was revealed upon investigation. The event was reported pursuant to Technical Specification 6.9.2.

A Design Change has been submitted to replace these detectors with flame detectors which are not sensitive to dust or dirt. The change is expected to be implemented by the first refueling outage following commercial operation.

Attached is LER 82-050/99 X-1 which is a final report.

Yours truly,
