Subject:

Emergency Feedwater System Seismic Qualification

Dear Sir:

In response to Reference (b), the following information is provided. This information summarizes past and present ef forts relative to seismic qualification of the emergency feedwater system.

The most recent effort has been to install tro new motor driven emergency feedwater pumps and associated piping to augment our existing feedwater capabilities. These pumps were installed during our refueling shutdown and are now operational. The pumps and valve actuators were purchased to a specified seismic level. The associated piping and pipe supports were designed with a static analysis at an acceleration of Sg.

Information pertaining to this installation was presented in References (c) and (d).

Additionally, a teau of NRC staff members and consultant performed a walk-down of the en2ergency feedwater system on November 4, 1980 (prior to system upg rade ). Reference (e) discussed the resulte of their inspection and specified two areas of action that could be taken immediately to significantly increase the seismic capability of the emergency feedwater system. The appropriate modifications were then initiated and have been implemented.

Reference (f) docuinents our commitment to perform these modifications.

Seismic analyses of structures, components, and equipment associated with the emergency feedwater system are currently in progress as part of the Systematic Evaluation Program. Reference (g) defines the scope of the analyses and P'mwam, v*

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission August 25, 1981 Attention:

Mr. Darrell G. Eisenhut, Director Page 2 discusses the overall program approach to our seismic assessment. Reference f

(h) presents the methodology and acceptance criteria currently being used.

t Furthermore, cable trays and other Class lE electrical equipment and components are being generically qualified in separate programs sponsored by the SEP Owner's Group.

Program descriptions have been provided to the NRC S ta f f.

Additionally, a walk-through has been performed to evaluate anchorages and supports of all safety related electrical equipment. The results of this effort have been presented in References.(i) and (j).

We believe the information provided above adequately responds to the intent of Reference (b). Based on the results and subsequent modifications identified f rom the walk-downs performed by your staff and ours, as well as our recent modification to install new motor driven pumps and associated piping, it is our position that there is reasonable assurance that the emergency feedwater system will function following a seismic event.

If you have any questions, or desire additional information, please contact us.
