  • CONFIRMATION OF AN IMMEDIATELY REPORTABLE EVENT (2-80-112) ,

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

This facimile confirms the conversation between Mr. A. C. Tollison, Jr.,

General Plant Manager, and Mr. Austin Harden of your office of 1630 on December 19, 1980.

While perforning corrective maintenance on 2-SW-V24, 2A Nuclear Service Water pump discharge check valve on December 9,1980, it was necessary to secure all Unit No. 2 service water pumps to completely isolate the valve from pressure. Unit No. 2 was in cold shutdown at the time.

Due to the unexpected duration of this repair, a heatup to approximately 212*F resulted which was reported by RED PHONE and by telephone to Region II. We addressed corrective actions and stated our intention to submit a thirty-day written report.

We have determined, following subsequent review of this incident, that it technically constitutes a prompt nctification event in that STS 3.7.1.2.b requires that core spray, LPCI, and diesels be declared inoperable with less than one service water pump operable. Actually, these systems were operable and available if needed since alternate cooling water was supplied to the diesels.
