v 1 TOLELO EDISON COMPANY DAVIS-BESSE NUCLEAR POWER STATION UNIT ONE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FOR LE?. NP-33-77-73 DATE OF EVENT: September 17, 1977 FACILITY: Davis-Besse Unit 1 IDENTIFICATION OF OCCURRENCE: Makeup Pump 1-2 rende, red inoperable to repair oil leak.

Conditions Prior to Occurrence: The plant was in Mode 3, with Power (MWT) = 0, and Load (MRE) = 0.

J Description of Occurrence: At 1800 hours0.0208 days <br />0.5 hours <br />0.00298 weeks <br />6.849e-4 months <br /> on September 17, 1977, Makeup Pump 1-2 was removed from service to allow Maintenance to repair an oil leak on the out-board bearing end place. This placed the station in the Action Statement of Technical Specification 3.1.2.4 which requires two Makeup Pumps operable in Mode 3.

\j Designation of Apoarent Cause of Occurrence: The old BUNA-N 0-Ring on the out-board bearing end place did not form. an adequate seal.

Analysis of Occurrence: There was no threat to the health and safety of the public or to station personnel. Makeup Pump 1-1 was operable during the duration of repair to Makeup Pump 1-2.

Corrective Action: A new O-ring was installed on the outboard bearing end plate.

The Makeup Pump was returned to service and declared operable by 2245 hours0.026 days <br />0.624 hours <br />0.00371 weeks <br />8.542225e-4 months <br /> on September 17, 1977, removing the station from the Action Statement of Technical Specification 3.1.2.4.

During a plant outage (October 5,1977), RTV106, a silicone sealant, was applied between the bearing end plate and housing which eliminated minor oil leaks at the housing. Both Makeup Pumps had new 0-rings installed and RIV106 silicone sealant applied at housing during the plant outage.

Failure Data: A Makeup Pump has been inoperable on three previous occasions.
