Dear Harry:
During the tense period this past weekend when we here at the fluclear Regulatory Corrission wcre working very hard to figure out what the conditions were at the Three flile Island fiuclear Station, and what might be done to improve the situation there, we sought lots of help from technical people all around the country.
You were among them, and I would like to take this opportunity, before much more time has passed, to thank you test sincerely for giving us part of your wcekend. As you probably know, the situation has improved considerably as of this writing (Thursday, April 5).
The problem that we were facing was r.ot an easy one, and at the time I first spoke to you we were really worried that oxygen buildup would s
cause us problems in the upper head of the reactor vessel before the i
weekend passed.
Yoar own help, plus that of your staff, was inpo-tant; x
also, your referring us to Dr. Lewis in Pittsburgh was a good lead,
\\
because he aid some detsiled calculations th-really showed us what the problems might be if the gas ignited.
I would like to thank you persona 71y, and also other members of the Avco sta f f, for the help.
It is ccaforting to know that, when technical problems arise on short notice, the many fine companies in this country (yours among them) are able and willing to contri-bute their ideas and efforts.
