UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 July 30, 2018 Mr. David Walter, Director Office of Radiation Control Alabama Department of Public Health 201 Monroe Street P.O. Box 303017 Montgomery, AL 36130-3017
Dear Mr. Walter:
On behalf of your friends and colleagues at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC),
and in particular the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards and Region I, I wish you the very best in your retirement. I want to personally recognize the 30 years of dedicated public service you provided to the State of Alabama, and your substantial contributions to public health and safety through your involvement in the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors, Inc. (CRCPD), the Organization of Agreement States (OAS), and NRC activities. Your exceptional efforts over the years were acknowledged through receipt of the 2001 James W.
Miller award, given by the CRCPD to celebrate your outstanding leadership and significant contribution to public health as the chairperson of the CRCPD working group charged with the development of suggested state regulations in the area of nuclear medicine. These suggested state regulations are extremely valuable to state radiological health programs for the uniform development of nuclear medicine requirements nationwide. The OAS also recognized your influential work as a state regulator by presenting you its 2013 Hall of Fame award. The NRC is grateful for the numerous times you acted as the OAS liaison to Management Review Boards for Integrated Materials Performance Evaluation Program reviews of Agreement State and NRC programs. Your tireless efforts and technical expertise have significantly enhanced Federal and State relations. The National Materials Program has benefitted from your continued excellence in fostering a positive working relationship among the CRCPD, OAS, NRC, and related organizations.
In your 30 years with the State of Alabama, and in particular your 4 years as the Radiation Control Program Director as well as your time serving as the OAS Chair, you have significantly strengthened the relationship between the Agreement States and the NRC. We here at the NRC are truly grateful for your many contributions and your efforts to help ensure consistent high standards of quality in radiation protection programs across the nation.
D. Walter 2
Our best wishes and thoughts are with you and your family for happiness and good fortune throughout your retirement.
Sincerely,
/RA/
Marc L. Dapas, Director Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards
