Dear Mr. Miltenberger:
SUBJECT: INSPECTION REPORT NOS. 50-272/93-14, 50-311/93-14, AND 50-354/93-10
This refers to the routine announced inspection conducted by Mr. Leonard Cheung of this
office on April 19 - 30, 1993, at the Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations in
Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey. Mr. Cheung discussed the results of the inspection with
senior members of your staff at the conclusion of the inspection. Subsequent to this
inspection, on May 29, 1993, and June 1, 1993, the inspectors.reviewed additional
information provided by your staff to clarify additional concerns on the issues discussed in
this report.
This inspection was directed at activities related to the engineering and technical support
provided for the operation of the Salem and* Hope Creek plants. * These activities are
important to assure the health and safety of the public .. The inspection indicated that the
engineering and technical support organizations were adequately staffed; good improvements
were noted in various areas, including backlog reductions, design changes and modifications,
and procurement engineering. Seven previously-identified inspection items were closed,
including one violation, one deviation, and five unresolved items. One unresolved item
pertaining to the transfer logic was updated as a result of this additional review. Areas
examined during this inspection are described in the NRC Region I Inspection Report, which
is enclosed with this letter. Within this area, the inspection consisted of selected
examinations of procedures and representative records, interviews with personnel, and
observations by the inspectors.
