Public Service Electric and Gas Company 80 Park Place Newark, N.J. 07101 Phone 201 /430-7000 September 26, 1980 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 Attention:

Mr. Steven A. Varga, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #1 Division of Licensing Gentlemen:

FIRE PROTECTION EVALUATION COMPARISON TO BTP 9.5 APPENDIX A SALEM GENERATING STATIO~

UNIT NO. 1 DOCKET NO. 50-272 In our letter of January 12, 1979 on this subject, we made a commitment under Action Item No. 21 that "Two (2) dedicated air breathing units (Bio-pacs) with two (_2) spare cylinders will be stored at the Reactor Containment entrance for each unit on Elevation 100 feet in the Mechanical Penetration Area.

This will be accomplished by relocating four (4) of the twenty (20) units presently available at the station."

Experience has shown it more advantageous to locate at least 10 Scott SCBA's at the Radiological Control Point for Units 1 and 2 to service the entire Controlled Access Area.

This method provides better control and less chance of equipment damage than the Mechanical Penetration Area location.

We hereby modify our previous commitment of January 12, 1979 and commit to locate at least 10 Scott SCBA's at the Radi-ological Control Point.
