ENCLOSURE 1

ADDITIONAL FIRE PROTECTION INFORMATION, REVIEW TURKEY POINT UNITS 3 5, 4 DOCKET NOS. 50-250/251 WATER SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS ITEM 3. 1.6 In our SER, we found the water suppression systems to be acceptable subject to a number of specific items.

We requested that minimum pipe sizes be no less than one inch in diameter, that no bushings be used, that heat collectors be provided for the sprinkler heads, that the water supply to the switchgear room sprinkler sys.em be independent of the deluge systems.

We also requested that the door openings in the two switchgear rooms be protected by a water spray system.

By letter dated May 7,

1980, the licensee provided the requested information concerning specific design detai ls of water suppression systems.

The licensee confirmed that minimum sprink'ler pipe sizes will be one inch, that no bushings were planned for, heat collectors will be provided on the sprinkler 'heads, and that the water supply feed to the switchgear room sprinkler heads wi 1-1.be independent;:of the deluge systems..

Also,.each door in the two switchgear rooms that face the transformer wi 11 be removed and the opening closed with a 3-hour rated wall.

The licensee concluded that.no water spr ay was needed for these doors.

We have reviewed the specific information on water suppression design details and find it to be acceptable.

FOAM SUPPRESSION ITEM 3.1.7 By letter dated May 7',

1980, the. licensee provided information concerning the diesel generator room foam system equipment.

Our original concern was that the foam application nozzles would not fit through special diesel generator room penetrations.

The licensee demonstrated that the room penetrations are 4 inches with the maximum outer dimension of the foam equipment at 3,23. inches.

Since the, foam equipment nozzles fit through the room penetration, we now find the foam system acceptable.

SMOKE DETECTION SYSTEM ITEM 3.2.1 By letter of May 7, 1980, the licensee provided information on in situ smoke detector testing.

The licensee conmitted to contracting with an independent registered fire protecti'on engineer to evaluate the adequacy of the smoke detection systems.

Since in. situ smoke detector testing is not state-.of-the-art yet, we consider the above proposal to be an acceptable alternative.

Based on our evaluation, we conclude that the licensee's proposal to utilize a registered fire protection engineer a satisfactory method to verify the adequacy of the smoke detection systems,.

and is, therefore, acceptable.

REACTOR COOLANT PUMPS ITEM 3.2.2 By letter dated May 7, 1980, the licensee provided information concerning the reactor coolant pump oil collection system.

The licensee stated that the oil collection system will cover all potential, leakage points, e.g.,

lift oil system, bearing oil cooler flanges, lower 'bearing oil reservoir.

Also, the licensee committed to designing the oil col.lecting system to with-stand an SSE.

Based on our evaluation, we conclude that the licensee's proposed RCP oil collection system meets our fire protection guidelines, the proposed Appendix R, and is, therefore, acceptable.

OTHER OPEN ITEMS By letter dated May 7, 1980, the licensee reiterated its position on the following items considered unresolved by us:

3.1.2 3.2.3 3.2.4 3.2.5 Fire Water Supply Water Supply Auxi 1 iary Building Corridor Cable Spreading Area The licensee did not provide. any additional information to justify its posi-tions.

We had previously reviewed these items and found them not to meet our guidelines or proposed Appendix R..

We consider these items to have remained unresolved.
