Dear Dr. Uhrig:
HRussell RReid We have completed our review of your letters dated January 21 and February 25, 1977 and January 3, 1978, which addressed the steam generator wate} hamer generic issue as applied to the St. Lucie Plant, Unit No, 1.
Based on this t,
review, we have concluded that the existing means for reducing the potential(
for steam generator water hammer are adequate for St. Lucie, Unit No.
1 with-out the use of automatic initiation of auxiliary feedwater.
lie have,
- however, concluded that automatic initiation of auxiliary feedwater would not adversely affect the operation of St. Lucie, Unit No.
1 with regard to steam generator water hammer and may, under ce} tain conditions, reduce the likelihood of'ater hammer.
The basis for our conclusions is provided in the enclosed Safety Evaluation Report and our consultants report dated January 1980.
Docket No. 50-335 Sincerely, Although we have accepted your methods for reducing the potential for water
- hammer, we will continue to review LER's and other St. Lucie, Unit No.'
reports for indications. of possible water hammer.
If such indications appear in the future, we wi11 reexamine this issue and may impose additional requirements to reduce the probability of steam generator water hamer.
