D920814 Mr. James M. Taylor Executive Director for Operations U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555
Dear Mr. Taylor:
SUBJECT:
PROPOSED RESOLUTION OF GENERIC ISSUE 151, "RELIABILITY OF ATWS RECIRCULATION PUMP TRIP IN BOILING WATER REACTORS" During the 388th meeting of the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards, August 6-8, 1992, we considered the staff's proposed resolution of Generic Issue 151, "Reliability of ATWS Recirculation Pump Trip in Boiling Water Reactors," and concluded that it is appropriate to drop it as a generic issue. However, because of the smaller relieving capacity for the pressure vessels of some of the early BWRs, the consequences of pump trip breaker failure for these reactors in some hypothesized, low-probability accident sequences could be severe. The course of the sequence, and its consequences, are likely to be highly plant-specific. We suggest that the review of the Individual Plant Examinations for these early BWRs ensure that any possible outliers resulting from pump trip breaker failures be identified.
Sincerely, David A. Ward Chairman cc: S. Chilk, SECY J. Blaha, EDO W. Minners, RES R. Baer, RES G. Sege, RES T. Murley, NRR M. Case, NRR
