D930811 Mr. James M. Taylor Executive Director for Operations U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555
Dear Mr. Taylor:
SUBJECT:
PROPOSED RESOLUTION OF GENERIC ISSUE 143, "AVAILABILITY OF CHILLED WATER SYSTEM AND ROOM COOLING" During the 400th meeting of the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards, August 5-6, 1993, we reviewed the NRC staff's proposed resolution of Generic Issue 143. During this meeting, we had the benefit of discussions with representatives of the NRC staff and its contractor, Pacific Northwest Laboratories. We also had the benefit of the documents referenced.
We agree with the staff's proposed resolution of Generic Issue 143.
Although GI-143 has been resolved, we believe that the licensees should review this issue as part of their IPEs. We are concerned, however, that there appears to be no process in place to ensure that the licensees have given appropriate attention to this matter.
We are also concerned about the large number of generic issues that have been dealt with in this manner, and we intend to address this matter in the near future.
Sincerely, J. Ernest Wilkins, Jr.
Chairman
