Dear:
Honorable Allison M. Macfarlane, Chairman U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission:
Thank you for your recent efforts regarding the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.
For your information, I have enclosed the letter that I sent to Gov. Jerry Brown.

Thank you for all your efforts, Hans Hans Backer Orange County, CA Enclosure (1):
Dear Gov. Brown:
1
It's time to convert SONGS into San Onofre Desalinization & Solar, Wind & Tidal Energy Generating Station.
As you may recall in January 2012, the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) leaked radioactive waste into the environment, exposing the health and safety of U.S. Marines and their families stationed at Camp Pendleton and local residents in San Clemente to unnecessary risks.
As Governor of California, please encourage President Obama to demonstrate leadership in protecting the health and safety of U.S. Marines and their families stationed at Camp Pendleton by authorizing the closure, clean up and conversion of SONGS to San Onofre Desalinization / Solar, Wind & Tidal Energy Generating Station.
San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) is located on federal land, one mile southwest of the northern entrance gate to Camp Pendleton.
Reasons to clean up SONGS now [before something really bad happens]:
- Units 2 & 3 have served their expected life of approximately 30 years.
- San Onofre has the worst safety complaint record in America.
- In 2010, 550 hours0.00637 days
0.153 hours
9.093915e-4 weeks
2.09275e-4 months
worth of radioactive liquid wastes were discharged into the Pacific Ocean.
- In 2010, 44 hours5.092593e-4 days
0.0122 hours
7.275132e-5 weeks
1.6742e-5 months
worth of radioactive atmospheric emissions were discharged into the Pacific sky.
- In December 2010, antifreeze was intentionally poured into the San Onofre backup generators.
- Units 2 & 3 were retrofitted with faulty Mitsubishi steam generators.
- Units 2 & 3 steam generators have more defects than all U.S. steam generators combined.
- Units 2 & 3 are located on an active seismic Newport-Inglewood fault.
- Units 2 & 3 are retrofitted to withstand a 7.0 earthquake only, not a 7.2 or greater magnitude quake.
- San Onofre is inadequately protected by a tiny 14 ft. tsunami seawall [at high tide]; Fukushima required a 45 ft. tsunami seawall.
- San Onofre is exposed and vulnerable to acts of terrorism.
- The San Onofre hazardous nuclear waste storage facility consisting of dry casks and open pools is an earthquake, tsunami nightmare.
2
- San Onofre's emergency evacuation plan is inadequate; a major 7.5 earthquake will easily trap and expose U.S. Marine families and area residents to radioactive waste.
- European studies have shown that children living near nuclear power plants are twice as likely to be diagnosed with leukemia.
The SONGS clean up and conversion will create thousands of jobs for middle class Californians.
Reasons to convert SONGS to San Onofre Renewable Energy Generating Station:
+ Units 2 & 3 have served their expected life of approximately 30 years.
" Huntington Beach Energy Generating Station is temporarily online to supply backup power.
+/- 700 middle class jobs or more will be created during the cleanup of SONGS.
+ Thousands of middle class jobs will be created in building San Onofre Desal /
Solar, Wind & Tidal Energy Generating Station.
+ Millions of residents support desalinization and renewable energy for Southern California.
+ It's the right thing to do.
The clean up and conversion of SONGS-Camp Pendleton will serve as a lasting legacy of the Gov. Brown Administration.
Please take a moment to do the right thing, for the safety and security of millions of families living near San Onofre.
