- Pat, By letter dated March 29, 2010, Exelon Generation Company, LLC (the licensee) submitted a license amendment request (LAR) for Braidwood Station, Units 1 and 2, and Byron Station, Unit Nos.1 and 2 (ADAMS Accession No. ML100880428). The LAR proposed to revise Technical Specification (TS) 5.5.7, "Reactor Coolant Pump Flywheel Inspection Program," by extending the reactor coolant pump (RCP) motor flywheel inspection interval from the currently-approved 10-year inspection interval to an interval not to exceed 20 years, in accordance with TS Task Force (TSTF) change traveler TSTF-421, with certain exceptions. The purpose of this message is to provide the results of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff's acceptance review of the LAR. The acceptance review was performed to determine if there is sufficient technical information in scope and depth to allow the NRC staff to complete its detailed technical review.
The acceptance review was also intended to identify whether the applications have any readily apparent information insufficiencies in its characterization of the regulatory requirements or the licensing basis of the plant.
Consistent with Section 50.90 of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR), an amendment to the license must fully describe the changes requested and follow, as far as applicable, the form prescribed for original applications. Section 50.34 of 10 CFR addresses the content of technical information required. This section stipulates that the submittal address the design and operating characteristics, unusual or novel design features, and principal safety considerations.
The NRC staff has reviewed your application and has concluded that it does provide technical information in sufficient detail to enable the NRC staff to proceed with its detailed technical review and make an independent assessment regarding the acceptability of the proposed amendment in terms of regulatory requirements and the protection of public health and safety and the environment. If additional information is needed for the NRC staff to complete its technical review, you will be advised by separate correspondence.
In accordance with our process as described in LIC-109, "ACCEPTANCE REVIEW PROCEDURES," I am placing a copy of this email in ADAMS as a publicly-available, official agency record.
Sincerely, Marshall David Senior Project Manager (301) 415-1547
