SUMMARY

OF THE MAY 11, 2009, OPEN HOUSE PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS NRC ACTIVITIES, NUCLEAR POWER ISSUES, AND THE CLINTON POWER STATION 2008 END-OF-CYCLE PLANT PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT On May 11, 2009, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) held an open house at the Elks Club in Clinton, Illinois. The purpose of the open house was to provide opportunities to discuss NRC activities, nuclear power issues, and Clinton Power Station performance for the 2008 calendar year with the public. The NRC letter and meeting notice for this open house can be found in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) as ML091120178 and ML091120182, respectively. A list of principal meeting attendees can be found in the Enclosure.

The open house discussed an overview of the NRCs Mission and Strategic Goals, the Reactor Oversight Process (ROP), and national ROP results. The NRC discussed other agency regulatory activities such as nuclear security and safeguards, the license renewal process, spent nuclear fuel and independent spent fuel storage installations, radiation safety, and new nuclear power plant construction and licensing activities.

The NRC also provided discussions related to the NRCs assessment of the Clinton Power Stations 2008 annual performance, which was documented in the March 4, 2009, End-of-Cycle assessment letter, under ML090630222. The End-of-Cycle assessment had been presented onsite to Clinton management and staff earlier in the day. As part of this open house, both Exelon and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) were available to answer questions. Slides used to describe the NRC ROP process and Clinton Stations 2008 performance can be found in ADAMS under ML091400332. Throughout the open house, members of the public were given the opportunity to ask questions of NRC officials.
