Relief Request RBS-ISI-001 (NRC TAC MC1 555)

Guy, I am resending RAI questions that I sent in early February that were developed by the staff of the Materials and Chemical Engineering Branch regarding River Bend Station Relief Request RBS-ISI-001 dated December 4, 2003, (NRC TAC MC1555). The request seeks relief from achieving Code-required coverage (>90 percent) when performing volumetric examinations of various components identified in your request.

After you and your colleagues have had a chance to further evaluate them, we can set up a call to discuss them if you desire to do so. Based on our previous phone conversations, I understand that these questions are similar to ones the NRC staff has sent to you regarding a Arkansas Nuclear One relief request.

Thank you, Mike Webb NRC Project Manager for River Bend Station 301-415-1347 The staff review finds that the River Bend Station relief request RBS-ISI-001 does not provide data sheets and results of ultrasonic examinations welds which show no recordable indications of degradation or no change in weld since last examination. Relief Request RBS-ISI-001 states that, *The examinations performed on the subject components, in addition to examinations of similar welds contained in the program, would detect generic degradation, if it existed, thereby demonstrating an acceptable level of integrity."

1) Have the subject welds been inspected in the past?
2) If the subject welds have been previously inspected, were any new indications identified or change in previous indications noted during the most recent examinations?
3) Was a comparison performed between the most recent ISI examination and the last? If the comparison was performed, what were the results for each weld listed below?
