Cook Nuclear Plant Groundwater Permit No.
GW1810102
Dear Mr. Jordan:
This notification is made pursuant to Cook Nuclear Plant's Groundwater Permit GW 1810102, Part I.11.(b, Compliance Requirements.
On August 1, 2012, we became aware of a noncompliance for inorganic mercury concentration at monitoring well 1A. The inorganic mercury concentration was confirmed to be 1.75 ng/l (0.00175 ug/l),
which exceeds the permit limit of 1.3 ng/l (0.0013 ug/h).
Well 1A is located SE of the plant's rapid infiltration basin, and is the closest monitoring well to this discharge point.
Upgradient well inorganic mercury concentrations ranged from 1.4 to 2.2 ng/l (0.0014 ug/l to 0.0022 ug/l), which likely contributes to the noncompliance issue.
Other downgradient wells in our program are within permit limits for inorganic mercury.
As required by Part I.11.c),
we have scheduled a resample of this monitoring well within the next 14 days (due date August 14, 2012).
As required by Part I.l1.d),
we will submit a written report to the Kalamazoo Office within 60 days (due date Sept 29, 2012).
Please contact me at telephone (269) 465-5901 ext. 2102 if you have any questions regarding this information.
Sincerely, Jon H.
Harner Environmental Manager Donald C.
