July 15,1982 IDENTIFICATION OF OCCURRENCE:

Meterological Monitoring Instrumentation Channels were inoperable contrary to Technical Specification 3.3.3.4.

CONDITIONS PRIOR TO OCCURRENCE:

Mode 1, Power Operations (90% Full Power)

DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:

At 0045 on July 13, 1982, during normal operation, the 175' and 33' wind speed channel and the 175' and 33' temperature channels of the Meterological Monitoring System were found, by an operator, to be inoperable. A thunderstorm was in the area at the time the occurrence was noted.. Maintenance was initiated and operability was restored on July 19,1982.

DESIGNATION OF APPARENT CAUSE:

The cause of this event is attributed to lightning striking the Meterological Tower.

ANALYSIS OF OCCURRENCE:

There was no effect upon the health or safety of the general public.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

t Damaged equipment was repaired, replaced, and calibrated. An evaluation is in progress to determine methods to prevent recurrence of this type of event.

FAILURE DATA:

This is the sixth occurrence for the 175' wind speed chann'el, the second occurrence for the 33' wind speed channel, the fifth ocurrence for the.175' temperature channel, and the fourth occurrence for the 33' temperature channel. This is'the twenty-second event repor ed under this specification.
